Welcome!

And here begins the adventure of telling my story. Since I moved from the middle of the city, to the middle of nowhere there have been many interesting stories and adventures that I have gone on. Even the drive to Colorado was an adventure itself! The majority of the way through the mid-west the temperature was in the negatives (Fahrenheit negatives). For someone who grew up in the Willamette Valley in Oregon where the 20s is really, really cold, this was a rather interesting experience. They say that dry cold doesn’t feel as cold as damp cold and I would have to agree from my experience on my visits to Colorado, but I would have to add when it is -15 degrees outside, it doesn’t matter how dry it is, it is just plain COLD!

When we arrived in Colorado we moved into a lovely little house, the perfect size for two. It was originally a school house and was moved to its current location and converted to a home in the 1950s (by farmers). Anyone who has ever known a farmer/rancher or grown up with one knows what that means. Nothing is perfectly straight, square, or the same size (if it should be). This has made things rather interesting, especially when we were moving in.

For example, my stand mixer only fits under ONE cupboard, and in my experience cupboards go under the category of being straight and being the same size (apparently not in our house). To add on to that, the part of the house that was the school was built around 1910, so it is 100 years old! Josiah and his dad spent the summer and fall before we got married renovating the house, and it was in desperate need of some repair. I will try to get some before and after pictures posted before long, it looks like a completely different house.

Even though they spent several months working on it, it still had some bugs to be worked out, which made the first several months of living in the house rather interesting. To name a few of the “bugs” we had issues with the septic tank, twice. The first time there was over 100lbs of fine tree roots in it! The second time the pipes froze since there was a big hole in the ground, where they dug to get the tree roots out.

By the time February came around there were not one, but two giant holes in our yard. One of them was from the septic tank issues and the other was to fix a broken water line to a horse tank behind our house. Neither of which could be refilled until late March because the ground was frozen. We were able to experience living without most of our plumbing for two days when they had to replace the majority of our pipes (luckily the toilet was working during this time).

So there are just a few examples of the many mishaps and adventures we have had since getting married and moving into our house. Life is always exciting and never perfect, so enjoy the ride and the stories of someone else’s adventures for once!

Which brings me to the purpose of this blog, to share with all of you, the wonderful, exciting, and sometimes humorous (though I am sure that it will often take me awhile to see the humor in many situations) adventures of my life on the ranch.
