Today I got to share in a wonderful experience that is quite common in this area…I hit a deer. I actually hit it, I have heard of many stories where the deer was more at fault than the driver, but not so in this situation there was no one to blame but me. Luckily I suffered no physical harm, and the car is not totaled, though there is quite a nice hole in the side of it. That was not the way I planned on ending my evening.
I was on my way home from Bible study, after dark. I am not quite used to having to turn the brights on all the time, being from the city where it is considered rude to randomly turn on your brights while driving down the road J. So I had turned them off while I passed a car going the other direction and forgot to turn them back on, though I still did have my the regular lights on, and I don’t think that having the brights on would have changed the outcome of this event any. The cruise control was set for 65, the actual speed limit, so speeding was not to blame either. I was about to go over this hill right before the turn off for our house, when the deer appeared.
First of all I screamed, every logical girls reaction, then I slammed on the brakes, and swerved a little (which I learned is a big no, no when avoiding a deer, it’s something about not going into the ditch and rolling the car, something like that J), and finally I still hit the deer, even with my attempts to avoid the collision. I continued to drive home, probably also not the best idea. But the car drove fine, and had it been acting weird I would have stopped and called Josiah, which I debated anyway, even though I was less than a mile from our house.
Once I got home I assessed the damage, a pretty good bend in the right end of the front bumper, a couple little dents on the hood, then I walked to right side…a hole you could probably put a soccer ball into, though not so round. When I say hole, I literally mean hole. There is a chunk a metal from the car somewhere between where the accident was and our house.
Here is the damage to the bumper.
Here is th hole.
Well that was enough excitement for me for the next month. And this would definitely be one of those stories that goes under the category of I’ll probably find it humorous at some point in the distant future, but not right now. I hope you enjoyed my adventure of the day, and I am optimistic that your day was at least slightly less exciting J.
Sorry for the lack of pictures but we are currently without a camera L. Hopefully when we got our camera in October I will be much better about posting pictures with stories such as this.
Katie, so glad you are fine...it must have been a horrible experience.
